Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is completely confidential with the exception of a few specific areas mandated by law. All therapists are legally required to report specific cases if it is shared that a child is currently or has been previously been abused. The other exception is that in which someone is in danger of harming themselves or others I must take action to keep either party safe from harm. At times it may be helpful to collaborate with others such as a doctor or teacher. We will discuss this option with you first and if you are in agreement we will require written consent to communicate with others.

How do I know if my child or family would benefit from therapy?
Children are often unable to verbalize their internal struggles however these concerns become apparent in other ways such as behavior, school work, relationships and family life. If you notice that your child is struggling with issues of self esteem, self worth, unhealthy relationships, risky behaviors, isolation or self -destructive actions he or she may need therapy to eliminate internal or underlying conflicts and to gain skills to increase a more productive and healthy sense of self.
Life changes daily offering a variety of opportunities for adjustment issues. Marriages, divorces, births, loss, medical crisis and just growing up in general are often areas of difficulty in which added supports can be helpful.

What should I tell my younger child about play therapy?
Keep it simple. Initially a child may be told they will be coming to play in the playroom for a short time each week. If the child asks for more information it can be explained that it is sometimes helpful to have someone to play with about things. Children love attention and love to play so they usually look forward to their time in play therapy.

What is the parents / guardians role in therapy?
When we initially meet with a child we will also meet with the family to gain a better understanding of both the child and the parent's perspective. We will then continue on to meet with the child individually with periodic family sessions. We will also meet with parents briefly at the start of each session to touch base.
